Life Archive.

LIFE Archive is a royalty free image search tool that you can use through Google. Another way to use this tool is in the Google image search bar you can search for example Pablo Picasso and the follow that with source:life. I have found the LIFE search quite useful for sourcing photos from vintage eras. As well, the photos are high resolution images that can be used for projects of personal use. Most of the images are black and white and they date back to the 1860’s. All of the photos are taken from LIFE magazine.

Anyone can search through millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive. They start from the 1750s and go through to present day. A lot of the photos have never been available but now through LIFE and Google we have the convenience of viewing history!

Veer. (Images and fonts)

Veer is one of my favourite sites to source photos for, this summer I spent a few months working at a design firm here in Winnipeg and we used Veer in a large portion of the sourcing for projects. They seem to be one of the best creative choices for photos on the internet. Also, the site offers a wide selection of typefaces for use in everyday projects.

Veer offers a large variety of creative solutions. In this way the audience was the professionals of the industry, but the audience could also be students who are looking for creative solutions to their problems. There seems to be a large amount of lifestyle shots on the website that really work well for moodboards and storyboards.

Stock Xchg. (Sxc.hu)

Stock Exchange is a free stock image website that I have found quite useful for gathering images for various projects throughout the years. They offer many free images that were taken by various people throughout the world. You can also take pictures on your own and submit them to the site. The stock images are royalty free images that the designer or user can use in personal or commercial work. I have found sxc.hu is quite handy for use as they offer up high resolution photos that can be used for projects or large sized compositions that use 300 DPI or more. Specifically, I have used sxc.hu for projects which include projects where I need pieces of a photo, such as a cloud, a part of a nautical map or even part of someone’s head.

Sxc.hu has a huge gallery containing over 350.000 quality stock photos by more than 30.000 photographers. SXC is a friendly community of photography addicts who generously offer their works to those who need them free of charge.

Various photos do cost money and are linked to Istock photo.

Recently, Sxc.hu was bought by Getty Images.
